Susan, Jill & List:

I included Azbill (Asbill) and Berryessa in this e-mail in hopes it would
catch someone's eye and they might have come across something on the Romero
family in the Mtn. View, Monterey and Carmel areas. I have not had an
opportunity to research this side of my family yet, and do not have any
data on them. I had one phone conversation with a 90 year old cousin in
Salinas last May. I would like very much to meet her, but haven't been
able to arrange that yet.

She told me an interesting story of an experience my G Grandmother, Mary
Romero, had as a young child while working in the cattle camp below Carmel.
As soon as the children were able, they were given jobs to do right along
with the rest of the family. One of hers was to help with the feeding of
the men and cleaning up after the meals. One day she got feed up and took
off by her self on a horse. She, as did the others, carried a gun and
apparently could handle it very well. She had ridden some distance from
camp and came upon a bear, which she shot and killed. She about 14 at the
time.

Ella d'Avila's maternal side was Native American Indian and
Spanish/Mexican. I can't find my notes as to her family name, but will get
back to you with it, when we return from Salt Lake City. Ella has a copy
of the "Roll Approved in 1933" listing the Indians of California qualified
under sec. 1 of the Act of May 18, 1928. It contains 458 pages plus a
supplement consisting of 38 pages. I made a copy of her copy. It contains

I apparently didn't copy pages 2 and 3 of the supplement, which would have
both Asbill, Azbill and Berryessa, if there were any.

I will do look ups after we return on 2/17/98, if anyone would like.

| I was curious....as to Berryessa being included in the title of this
email.
| Am I missing something....(I being a Berryessa)...was trying to figure
out the
| connection to Romero. Or was something not included in your orig email to
| Norcal.
| Just CURIOUS...I look for any Berryessa tidbits I can get at.
| Please let me know how Berryessa figures in all this...altho I do know
they came
| directly from Spain but I'm not sure if it was from Valencia or the
Basque
| region.
| Only this week did I hear the name d'Avila....maybe connected with my
| Littlejohn branch
| that married into the Berryessa family Nov 1894.
