Jill: Have you heard of the small booklet: MINORITY WITHOUT A CHAMPION;
KANAKAS ON THE PACIFIC COAST,1788-1850? Published with the aid of The
Westland Foundation, copyright 1972, Oregon Historical Society, Portland,
Oregon. 24 pages, and neat inside cover illustrations. Trade you photocopy
for one of the "Forgotten Californians."
In some of the early Baja/Alta California Mission records, they not only
are referred to as Kanakas, but also Sandwich Islanders (which isn't too
unusual), but also San Luis Islanders as I recall. It took years to solve
that one, and when I run across the story, I'll send it to you.
Best wishes, Cindy
P.S. I follow this story with great interest. Thank you for sharing it
all.

> Hi...just received the copies you sent. Thank you. I found it very
interesting reading. You are right that there has not been much history
written about the Hawaiins who came to California in the early days. But
it does not surprise me that this has been the case. History has been told
almost completely from the view point of the whites. Those people who do
not fit into this category have been either left out completely as though
they never existed, or their stories have been romanticized to the point of
being fiction instead of fact.

return the favor and send you a copy of "The Forgotten Californians". This
short manuscript was written by a lady who knew Henry Azbill, son of Mele
Ke'a'a'la & John Azbill. Henry helped her write it, and it is really
something I think you will find fascinating. I already have an extra copy,
so I would just have to put it in an manilla envelope and send it
off...would you be interested in having it?
