From the HISTORY OF BUTTE COUNTY, 1918 by George C, Mansfield:
Cherokee received its name from a band of Cherokee Indians who came to
California in 1853 and established themselves there. These Indians came
with S. O. Potter. Potter was a Maine schoolteacher, who had been
teaching in the Indian Territory.
