PIKE, Roy W.
PIKE, Roy W. - 91, Myers Point, formerly of Dartmouth, died peacefully
in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, August 5, 2002. Born in Port
Saunders, Nfld., April 28, 1911, he was a son of Charles and Anastasia
(Caines) Pike. He trained as a carpenter and mariner. During the Second
World War, Capt. Pike immigrated to Canada from Newfoundland, enlisting
in the R.C.A.F. Due to his vast maritime knowledge and experience, he
was seconded to serve at Shearwater Naval Air Station and commanded a
high-speed ocean rescue patrol boat. He finished his civilian career
employed at HMC Dockyard, in charge of DND Yardcraft. He commanded
various boats including HMCS Sackville, New Liskeard, CNAV Bluethroat
and several National Defence ocean tugs. He was an active sailor and
boat builder, spending his later years working on his retirement
property in Jeddore and wintering in the Bahamas. He will be sadly
missed by his sister, Alfreda, Port Saunders, Nfld.; daughters, Eudora
Helen MacInnis, and Yvonne Elizabeth Haggett; sons, Joseph Roy, Albert
and James; grandchildren, Daniel (Cindy) MacInnis, Michael (Lesley)
MacInnis, Nancy Jane MacInnis, Michelle Pike, Erin and Kellie Haggett;
great-grandchildren, Kimberley, Nicholas, Jenna, Luke MacInnis; numerous
nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife, Florine Billiard; sons, Ignatius and
Charles Gordon Pike. He was a 55 year veteran member of Masonic
Cornwallis Lodge 95 and a long-time member of Emmanuel Church,
Dartmouth. Visitation will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. in Dartmouth Funeral Home,
29 Queen St. Funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, August 8, in
Emmanuel Church, Windmill Road at Dawson St., Dartmouth. Reception to
follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers, the family would
appreciate donations to Camp Hill Veteran's Garden Fund. (473-7932).
