Subject: [NEW-HAMPSHIRE] McLAUGHLIN Families from Francestown, NH, to St. David, NB .. 1700's (KIDDER, WILKINS)
Date: Sun, 22 Sep 2002 09:15:31 -0400
Good morning,
Early in the summer, through the Internet, etc., I "met" some new "distant
KIDDER cousins" who are helping me with my research. One of the cousins
in Maine .. is much more interested in ..proof.. and documents than I am ..
One of the Kidder's on our mutual Kidder family tree is .. Miranda
(McLaughlin) Kidder, wife of J. Calvin Kidder, Jr., of Princeton, ME.
My "cousin" has gone to the State Archives in Augusta and found Mrs. Miranda
Kidder's death papers, and her father was listed as ... Jeriah McLaughlin.
During the past year, I have had ..several.. people tell me that Miranda's
father was ... Laughlin McLaughlin .. son of Thomas and Joanne McLaughlin
of Francestown, NH.
(Mother was listed as Mildred SCRIPPS McLaughlin (instead of Pamela/Amelia
CRIPPS (Walker) McLaughlin ????)
I was wondering if anyone thought that Laughlin was this man's nickname, and
that his birth name might have been Jeriah "Laughlin" McLaughlin.
The consensus is that this "Laughlin" McLaughlin, b1779 NH, had 19 children
with two wives; first, Hannah HALL, and then, secondly, Pamelia/Amelia
CRIPPS/SCRIPPS (or Mrs. Pamela CRIPPS WALKER).
This morning, out of curiousity, I went to the LDS site, and found a wealth
of mis-information .. on this McLaughlin ..extended.. family .. But, I
also found out that there were .. quite a few .. McLaughlin .. families in
New Brunswick during the 1800's. I was wondering if someone could tell
me .. how many of the McLaughlin families went to New Brunswick during the
1700's .. and what their names were (for 1800's only).
I just checked an old e-mail from July .. and found this list of Thomas and
Joanna's family:
Thomas Joseph McLaughlin, b1739, New Boston, NH
marr. Joanna SEARLES
CH:
Thomas Joseph McLaughlin, Jr., b17??
Robert McLaughlin, b17??
Elizabeth McLaughlin, b17??
James McLaughlin, b17??
Laughlin McLaughlin, b1779, Francestown, NH
Zachariah McLaughlin, b178?
Anna McLaughlin, b178?
(Thomas, Sr., died in New Brunswick in 1827, and his
wife, Joanna, died there in 1834.)
Because "Laughlin" could have had the birth name, Jeriah, I looked for that
name on the LDS site, and found a Jeremiah McLaughlin (b1818 NB), who seems
to have been one of "Laughlin's" sons .... But, it is also curious that ..
not only did he marry one.. McLaughlin .. girl, he secondly married her
younger sister ... The parents of Frances and Hannah McLaughlin are listed
as .. James and Nancy (Foster) McLaughlin. If this James was Laughlin's
brother, does that mean that Jeremiah married a first-cousin, twice?
Also, if five McLaughlin brothers were living in NB from ~1800 on .. how
many children did they have between them? Or, how many grandchildren did
Thomas and Joanna have?
In summary, I am curious if other people are researching .. this McLaughlin
family coming out of St. David, NB, in the very early 1800's, and whether or
not there is a complete list of the names in this family.
Curiousity question: If the Laughlin McLaughlin b1779 NH might have had
the official birth name, Jeriah McLaughlin, how many of the other ..
Laughlin McLaughlin's .. in NB .. during the 1800's .. had different ..
official birth names?
FYI: My "distant cousins" and I are getting a more complete picture of
"Calvin" and Miranda KIDDER's family tree. But, there still does not
appear to be a complete list of the names of the 13 children born to them.
We have less than half of the names. If anyone could contribute
information, we would appreciate it.
(Calvin and Miranda were centered around Princeton, ME, from the 1860's
until about the 1920's ..)
Thank you for your time.
Betty (near Lowell, MA)
P.S. My ancestor was Joseph KIDDER, older brother to J. Calvin Kidder,
Jr. Joseph served in the Civil War and was injured. Upon his return
to Princeton, ME, he married his first cousin, Clarissa WILKINS, who was
raised in York County, NB, son of George and Mary WILKINS (from Amity, ME).
(We continue to look for the names of the grandparents of George WILKINS and
his sister, Mary Jane WILKINS, wife of J. Calvin KIDDER, Sr. (father:
Samuel Wilkins, b1770 ME).
