I am sure you have received dozens of answers to your questions.? I suggest you use the Family History Library website, especially the guides?but also?the FHL catalog in an effort to guide you in your research.

Go to www.familysearch.org?????? Look for the word Guides--I think it is on the opening screen.? There should be a guide to genealogical?research in?North Carolina.?? When a longish list comes up, then look under Churches, but DO NOT overlook sections about land records, court records [Quakers and other pacifists got in trouble frequently for not taking oaths], probates, etc.? Then go to the tab called Library.? Click on that and find the word Catalog.? Then click on Catalog.? Then click PLACE and type in Orange and on second line North Carolina.?? Be sure to click on any prompt that mentions films.? There will be another page for you to print out, if that is your desire.

In the FHL catalog, you also may want to use a Keyword search in the catalog for Quakers.? I forget the author who put together many volumes about Quakers, many of whom went to Indiana because of their objection to slavery, I am told.

Do keep in mind that most of the white?people, at least in the South, were land owners until quite late, and that is why land records are most important in your research.? Court records are also good.

Tax lists are good census substitutes.? If you are looking for births, deaths, and marriages, remember that the FHL catalog lumps all these under Vital Records (at least in the US).

Happy hunting!

Subject: [NCORANGE] Orange County, NC Quaker records, Lindley & Woody

I am researching a Quaker family from Orange County, North Carolina and need
suggestions of where to search.

Here is the family information that I know:

John Woody married Mary Lindley in Maryland in 1738. He died in Orange
County, NC in 1762. I do not know his parentage.

Mary Lindley was born in 1717, possibly in Chester, PA and died in Orange
County, NC in 1795. Her parents were James Lindley and Eleanor Parke. I have
no

dates or locations for her parents.

John Woody and Mary Lindley had a son, Joseph Woody who was born in
Baltimore County, MD about 1748. Here is the DAR information for his Rev.
War service:

WOODY, Joseph

Birth: MD Circa 1748

Service: NC

Rank: PS (Patriotic Service)

Death: NC Before (ante) 2- -1815

Patriot Pensioned: No Widow Pensioned: No

Children Pensioned: No Heirs Pensioned: No

Spouse: (1) Sarah Thompson

Joseph is the only child I have for this couple.

I need to find records for this family and ancestors for both John and Mary.

Thanks for any help and suggestions.

Sue Russell,

a descendant of John Russell & Elizabeth Webb who were founding members of
Center Methodist Church in what is now Alamance County, NC
