Here is an excerpt from Marty Grant's website:
"William Davis' early life is mostly unknown. According to tradition,
William Davis and his father (name unknown) both expert hunters and
riflemen, served as scouts with Braddock at his defeat by the French and
Indians in 1755 at Fort Duquesne. ("The Davis Family Record" by Orville
Wright Davis, 1978 page 2).
He served in Revolutionary War in Virginia and North Carolina. He was
wounded at the Battle of Kings Mountain in the thigh, with a wound that
troubled him the rest of his life. The only official records found for him,
to date, is his name "William Davis" in Halls Company, 2nd Regiment, North
Carolina Continental Line. The records show he enlisted on 7 Nov 1776, and
his promotion to Corporal on 1 Apr 1779. In recent years there has been
some debate as to whether these records pertain to "our" William Davis or
some other. A Thomas Davis was also in the same company, enlisting in 177,
promoted to Sergeant Major on November 1777, back to Private in Feb 1778,
then Sergeant in November 1778. This could be William's supposed brother
Thomas Davis. There was also an Asa Davis in the same company, who was a
Musician. ("Roster of North Carolina Soldiers in the American Revolution",
page 60)"
