Don't know if this will help or not..., but do you think your James is a descendant of Isaac Robinson (ca1727-1808) and Catherine Perkins? (This is a separate line from Anna Torrence and Wm. Robinson... - this Wm. was a son of John and Elizabeth Robinson - my ancestor, was a sister named Elizabeth, of this Wm. Robinson. Elizabeth married a Moore.)
Anyway, I kept a record of these two Robinson lines, but my info. ends with children of Issac mentioned below. I have additional notes on Isaac if you're interested.

Per a paper from Anne Williams McAllister:
"ISAAC ROBINSON, the pioneer came to Lincoln County NC about 1747 along with many of the first settlers in the census for 1790 he is listed with a wife, six sons and two daughters. His will was probated in Lincoln Co on January 1, 1808 and mentions his wife Catherine, with seven sons and two girls, showing that another son was born after 1790.
The names of the children mentioned are ELIJAH ISAAC JOSHUA JAMES JOSEPH ABRAHAM JESSE PRISCILLA & CATHERINE stating that his daughter Nancy had died and her part was to go to her children.

This is all the little info. that I have for this family... since I'm not a direct descendant of this line, my information is sketchy at best:
