Sons of American Revolution
Announce a dedication/marking ceremony for Revolutionary War Patriots Graves

Elizabeth Whitehead Grimes, wife of Hugh Grimes, mother of James, Joseph and
Sampson, is listed in “Women Patriots of the American Revolution: a
biographical dictionary” by Charles E. Claghorn and on the payroll voucher list for
the July 1783 to 19th of March 1784 for the comptrollers office as receiving
pay vouchers for supplying provisions for the army.

James Grimes, Sr. born 1747 in Virginia and died 1831 in Duplin Co., NC.
James married Sarah Winders of Duplin County on February 19, 1777. James and
Sarah were the parents of 8 sons and 4 daughters. James served as Private in
the Duplin Co., NC militia.

Sampson Grimes born 8-10-1749 in Virginia, moved to North Carolina at age 3,
died in May 1828 in Duplin County. Sampson married (1) Winifred Branch, who
died before 1781, they had one child, Sarah, (2) Bethsheba Winders, they were
the parents of 2 girls and 3 boys, one of whom was Jesse who signed the Texas
Declaration of Independence and had a Texas County named after him. Sampson
served as a Private under Capt. William Taylor and Col. James Kenan at the
battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge

Joseph Grimes born 1752 in Duplin County, died about 1789 in Duplin County,
Joseph married Elinder, they had 6 children. Joseph served as a Lieutenant
under Capt. Charles Ward in a segment under the command of Gen. Lillington.

You are invited to a dedication/marking ceremony at the graves of the above
persons, conducted jointly by Marquis de Lafayette Chapter, Sons of American
Revolution, Fayetteville, Georgia and Marquis de Lafayette Chapter, Sons of
American Revolution, Fayetteville, North Carolina.

The grave marking will be at the Grimes Cemetery, 1484 Summerlins Crossroads
Road (NC1004), Sunday October 29 at 1:00PM. It is 12 miles from Mt. Olive, 8
miles from Kenansville.

The easy way for those coming from the south or Fayetteville area
is to come Hwy 24 from Fayetteville to Warsaw, proceed straight
through Warsaw (no turn after I-40) onto Ward’s bridge road, go 8 miles to
Summerlins Crossroad, turn left and go 2 miles, the number is on the mailbox on
the right side and a large house sits about 100 yards back from the road.

For those coming from the west, Charlotte, Raleigh, etc. the easy way is to
come east on I-40 to Hwy 24, go left into Warsaw and proceed as above.

For those from out of area needing lodging, at highway 24, just at the west
side of I-40 there is a Holiday Inn Express, PH 910-293-2800, rates; if we
reserve 10 will be 71.00, if we reserve 15 or more will be 68.00. Across the
street is a Days Inn, PH 910-293-2525, rates, King-size 55.00, 2 double 60.00.

I recommend the Holiday, and will reserve 15 rooms. For anyone wanting one
of them, please call me or mention Grimes Group when calling the motel. There
are also numerous dining facilities within sight of these, Smithfield Barbeque,
Burger King, Bojangles, and several others
