Subject: James PETTITT m. Rachel JONES - Newport?
Date: Thu, 26 Apr 2001 23:16:14 -0400

James PETTITT retired from the 57th Regiment of Foot 27th April 1857 -
intended place of residence Newport, Mon. At this time there was no sign of
a wife.

11 August 1857 he started work as Constable no 25 in the Monmouthshire
Constabulary in Usk and is shown as being married and resident at Marshes
Rd., Newport.

The mother of all his children is Rachel PETTITT (née JONES) born
Abercarn(e), Mon. abt 1828.

There is no record of this marriage at the GRO so I suspect it is one of the
5% that go missing.

There are indications that Rachel may have been Baptist since their children
declared their religion as Baptist on various documents.

From this evidence can anyone suggest where to start looking for a missing
marriage record that never made it to the GRO? A Baptist Chapel in Newport
perhaps?

Many thanks

Hugh Wallis
