I'm trying to research a Company-Taylor and Sanderson Steam Shipping Company of Sunderland UK, and specifically, their ship the Coronation.
After owning Sailing ships, John Taylor and John Sanderson formed the Taylor and Sanderson Steam Shipping company. By 1884 they owned 9 steamers which sailed out of Sunderland.Ship names I'm aware of are - Universal,Britannia, Regina, Peeress, Thornhill,Empress and Coronation . I'm particularly interested in the Coronation which was built by Short Bros in 1903 and ran aground off Ravenscar in 1913. The Captain at the time was Nicholas Thompson Phillips.
Addresses I believe the Company operated from - 1886-99 -28 Bridge St Sunderland - 1899 -1921 -34 West Sunnyside Sunderland.
I believe the Companys ships were sold off during World War 1 and the company went into liquidation in 1917, with final distribution of assets in 1922.
Any information you could provide on either John Taylor, John Sanderson or their companies would be most welcome. Also I'd be interested in any detail you have on the Coronation or any of the sailing vessels Messrs Taylor and Sanderson owned before forming their Steamer company.

The bare-bones details of the Taylor & Sanderson Steam Shipping Company Ltd (capital, shareholding, articles of association, directors, winding up etc) can be found at the National Archives, ref: BT 31/16272/63792. The limited company was formed in 1899. Sometimes these files contain the legal agreement by which the new company acquired the old unincorporated company or partnership and interesting detail about the business - otherwise they are rather dry and rarely have anything on then ships themselves.

There is also a "companies winding up" case in the High Court in 1910 - file ref: J 13/5676. (This one needs to be ordered at least 3 days before a visit as it is held off-site). They were clearly not wound up in 1910, as you already know (and confirmed by a legal claim in 1912 against the Cardiff Railway after an accident involving their steamer WALLACE - ref: RAIL 1057/1366).

Suspect that John Sanderson was the one appearing in the 1881 Census at 9 Cambridge Terrace, Tatham Street, Bishopwearmouth, Co Durham :

John SANDERSON Head M Male 47 Sunderland, Durham, England - Ship Owner North
Sarah SANDERSON Wife M Female 46 Sunderland, Durham, England
Sarah G. SANDERSON Daur U Female 21 - At Sea
Lizzie SANDERSON Daur U Female 19 Sunderland, Durham, England
Meggie SANDERSON Daur U Female 16 Sunderland, Durham, England
Fanny SANDERSON Daur U Female 14 Sunderland, Durham, England - Scholar
Margaret ROBINSON Serv U Female 22 Tweedmouth, Northumberland, England - General Domes Servant

(Interesting that the eldest daughter was born at sea in about 1860 - so he is likely to have been a ship-master at that time)

In a brief look cannot find a relevant John Taylor in that Census (too common a name!!)

Good luck in your search
