Hi Norma:
Did your Murphrey's go to TX? I also have a Murphrey line, and it's a good
chance it's tied to Ernie's line.
I have a Willis Murphrey who was the son of Richard Murphrey who presumably
died prior to May 1808 in Sampson Co., NC. What I mean by presumably is
that a Richard Murphy who is from Duplin Co., NC and lived in Amite Co., MS
became guardian of Willis along with his brother and sister in 1810 Amite
Co., MS. This was only after Willis Magee became their guardian in
1808. Willis Magee was married to Asha Scott, daughter of Joseph Scott of
Duplin Co., NC. Asha's sister Jerusha was married to a Murphrey. We
believe that Jerusha is the mother of these children and the wife of
Richard. Our Willis and his wife Priscilla Dixon had a son Jerrett Scott
Murphrey. We're of the opinion that Richard had abandoned his family in NC
and eventually settled in MS by way of GA.
Richard shows ties through land records to Michael Murphrey of
Duplin/Sampson Co., NC. He was in the county as early as 1762, the year of
birth for the Richard Murphy of Amite Co., MS. According to Murphrey
researchers, this Michael is supposedly the son of Capt. John Murphrey and
Elizabeth Harrison of Isle of Wight VA and Greene Co., NC. The Murphrey's
in Duplin/Sampson Co., NC are very closely tied to the Chestnutt family who
also originated from Isle of Wight.
Our Willis settled in DeZavalla Colony, now Sabine Co., TX in 1825. My
husband descends from his daughter Elizabeth Murphrey who married James
Sloan Deweese.
