My ggg grandfather, John A. Phillips, moved to the Richwood township in
1870. Our family did not know where he went from Dyer county, TN until I
found him in the census. His son, Henry H. Phillips, died in 1872 in MO due
to wounds received in the Civil War where he fought for the South. Until I
found his father in the census we did not know why Henry died in MO when he
lived in Dyer County, TN. He must have been visiting or moving.
I have only visited the area once and located the old house which he bought
from William and Louisa Jane Shelton in 1870. It has been added on to and
is still being lived in. There were Sheltons in Miller county that were in
the extrended family.Any info that you could give me might help me figure
out why he picked Miller County as a new home.
Maybe some of his family were in those who did not show up in the census.
In 1880, his supposed brother, Thomas S. Phillips, was living in Richwood
Township with his wife Sarah E., sons Benjamin F and Edward G., and daughter
Mary S (age 16 born in Mo) The oldest son was born in Ark. Therefore I
wonder if he was there before 1870. Any thoughts or info about this family
would be appreciated. Sarah, the wife was widowed and had grown children.
Is there any written account of this area of the county in the 1870's and
1880's?
