Subject: [MOMILLER] Ed James, arrested
Date: Mon, 11 Dec 2006 18:33:11 -0600
The Maries Courier, May 24, 1879
On Saturday last Ed. James, a farmer over fifty years of age,
living on Lane's Prairie, in this county, was arrested on a warrant issued
by Justice Lacey, at the instance of M.N. Thompson and Wm. Collins, charging
him with administering poison to his wife, from the effects of which she
died. On Sunday the body of the woman alleged to have been poisoned was
exhumed by Doctors Jones and Elder who removed the stomach, which was sent
to the School of Mines for analysis.
The case will be investigated before Justice Lacey at
Bloomington on Monday Nest.
We refrain from giving publicity to the many rumors we have
heard regarding the case, until the investigation shall have been had. The
offense charged is one of the worst in the category of crime, and the
accused-who is an old citizen of the county, and has always borne an
excellent character-should have a fair, full and impartial hearing before
public sentiment should pronounce upon his case.
We sincerely trust that the charge may prove to be groundless,
and that it may be shown at the investigation that Mr. James not only did
not poison his wife, but that she died from purely natural causes.
