Could someone explain to me in layman's terms what a women's DNA will tell about her family?

I understand that a man's can tell if he's in a group w/ that surname & it's passed down from father to son, but if he was researching his gtgt granfather through his gt.gr. mother it wouldn't give that info, just the male w/ the same surname.

But what about the women in the families & what can they find through DNA?
