Subject: Mary ? Sarah Barley

After beating my head on this brickwall for a couple of years, I decided I needed to document my gg-grandmother's maiden name. I have it as BARLEY, which is from a family bible. I ordered the microfilm of the Carver Co. birth records only to find that the mother's maiden name is not listed. As I looked up my g-grandmother and her siblings' births, I found one interesting entry. The first born child of Thomas and Sarah Smith lists the mother's given name as Mary. The rest say Sarah. This is the first and only time I have seen Sarah use the name of Mary.

A number of helpful people on these lists have looked up Sarah for me in the past. Now I am hoping that someone will help me out with Mary. Thomas and (Mary) Sarah Smith are listed in the 1870 Carver Co. census. I believe they had just married. I have not been able to locate Sarah in the 1865 Territorial Census. Perhaps she is listed as Mary Barley, instaed of Sarah. My cousin and I believe she may be from the area which became McLeod Co. but could also be Carver Co. (I am trying to visualize the MN map of the time and I suppose that McLeod and Carver came from the same territory but can't remember for sure.)

In addition, could someone tell me the name of the newspaper in the Camden, Carver Co. area in 1907. Perhaps I can find an obituary. Sarah Smith died 21 Jun 1907 in Camden.

Thanks for your help,
Corinne
