BROTEN, Mr. Larry DuWayne

Passed away April 19, 2005 at Borgess Medical Center. He is survived by his wife of 39 years Patricia; daughter, Debra (Greg) Will of Kalamazoo; son, Daniel Broten of Plainwell; beloved grandchildren, Chelsea, Jakob, and Phoebe Will; brother, Bob Broten of Bellevue, WA; sister, Susan (Steve) Detwiller of Seattle, WA; mother-in-law, Freda Sanders of Hibbing, MN; brothers-in-law, Bruce (Sheila) Sanders of Coon Rapids, MN, and Jerry Sanders of Hibbing, MN; a number of nieces and nephews; and his companion black lab Belle. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Grace Broten; sister, Jennifer (Jim) Link; brother, John Broten. Larry was born on November 25, 1942, in Hannaford, ND, where he graduated from high school. He received his Pharmacy Degree from North Dakota State University with further studies at the University of Iowa and Nazareth College of Kalamazoo. He served in the U.S. Navy with duty in Vietnam as a corpsman, earning a commendation for assisting with !
major surgery aboard ship in a typhoon. He lived in Galesburg for 30 years, working first as manager of Osco Drug, then Chief of Pharmacy at the VA Medical Center in Battle Creek. Larry loved to hunt and fish and belonged to a number of sporting and conservation organizations. He recently achieved his goals of landing a swordfish on a fly and parachuting from a plane. Visitation will be on Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at L angeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave. A Memorial Service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday the 23rd at the funeral home with Larry's nephew, Pastor Derek Broten of Woodbury Lutheran Church in Minnesota, and Pastor Don Barnes, of Galesburg Baptist Church, officiating. A luncheon will follow at 4 p.m. at Galesburg Baptist Church, 10100 Shadowlane, Galesburg. Interment will be Monday the 25th at 10 a.m. at Fort Custer Cemetery, with full military honors. Memorials in Larry's memory may be made to American Cancer Society, Galesburg Baptis!
