Hope this will help. I am taking this from Peter Gerhard's "The Northern Frontier of New Spain" p 158.
"The first major ore discovery here was in the vicinity of what became known as Veta Grande, and there most likely is where the miners settled in 1548-1549. Within a short time other veins where found , and the principal real was moved to the northern part of the canyon where it was to remain. The first mine workers were the Zacatecos themselves, with others from Tlaxomulco and Juchipila, but there were groups of Nahuatl-speaking Mexicans and Tlaxcaltecans, and Tarascans, living here at mid-16th cent.
The mining area extended northward for several leagues to Panuco, where a separate mixed-race community emerged befor 1570. The 1772 report locates 14 haciendas. There was a very devasting epidemic of 1737-1739 which caused an aeconomic and demographic decline."

Hope this helps,
Christopher
