Surname: Casares
-------------------------
Glad to hear from you; the Casares family has been living in the Basque
Country since the 12th century. They were, together with the Arzac family,
living outside San Sebastian, on a hill, overlooking the Port of Pasajes,
which had a tremendous importance in Spanish history. They were landowners,
shipbuilders, farmers, and in recent generations there was at least one
doctor per generation in the family, from the Casares side, the last one
being my grandfather.they were quite wealthy; among other activities, they
had, and kept for centuries, the monopoly for supplying the King's vessels
sailing from Pasajes on long sea voyages, with cider;this was the preferred
beverage because water went putrid soon, and cider kept better. I am 59,
but still remember the extensive apple orchards of Alza, and the "lagares"
for cider making.
Apparently they went to Mexico around the 18th century?. the family names
for those years would have been: Casares, Escurrechea; Casares, Larracho;Casares,
Aduriz;Casares, Ibarburu;etc.I have gone back in time until 1.635, and
the name accompanying Casares, was the surname of the corresponding wife.
In the parish records, there is a gap for a certain Domingo Casares, from
1.607 until 1.650, there did not appear any Domingo Casares being baptised
here, but he died here and married Quiteria Larracho, and both were from
families of the same place. He died here in 1703, and dictated his last
will to his wife in the presence of three witnesses.
I find all of this so interesting! He is probably the missing link here,
but he may have lived in Mexico!!!
Hope this helps you.
By the way, it has always been said in my family that the Casares side
of the family had very big heads, in the real sense of the word. bye.
