Surname: CHURCH
-------------------------
For church records available through the Mormon Library and its associate
centers, open to all people regardless of race, creed, color, etc., go
to this site:
http://familysearch.com/Search/searchcatalog.asp
And put the name of your town into "Place" search. Records for most places
in Mexico will show census records (usually 1930 census only), civil registry
records (Nacimientos) and church records (Bautismos, matrimonios, defunciones).
Plug in your places, take down the microfilm number and you can order them
for a month for $3.77.
If you are afraid to do it, you can hire someone to do your initial searches.
And if they find anything after an initial search, you can decide where
to go from there. Most church records for Zacatecas are available through
the library, but there are some gaps for some northern Zacatecas churches
circa 1840 to 1861. Some of the northwestern Zacatecas churches (Fresnillo,
Sain Alto, Rio Grande, and others) only have church records at the Mormon
Library back to 1860, but the Univ. of Las Cruces has some of their records
going back earlier (because they were attached to the Archdiocese of Durango).
Good luck. Do you have dates for your ancestors? If you don't, you may
want to consult Alien Registration, Border Crossing or Naturalization records.
I'm writing up something about that for Frank to post.
Take care,
John
