Surname: FRESNILLO

Hi Victoria:

Have you checked the Family History Catalog on line?
This is their site:

http://familysearch.com/Search/searchcatalog.asp

If you check this site, you will see that the church records for Fresnillo
go back to the early 1600s. But you have two separate listings for Fresnillo.
One of the churches dealt with baptisms, confirmations, and marriages for
the main church "La Purificacin." But there is a second batch of church
records for Fresnillo and these records deal with the outlying areas to
the north of town and some other areas, collateral churches belonging the
parish of Fresnillo.

If you find these online you can order them at your local Family History
Center and view them. Civil records for Fresnillo are also available. Records
before the 1860s for Fresnillo may be available at the Diocese of Zacatecas,
although I am not sure about that.

When General Santa Ana went into battle against the Zacatecas militia in
1835, he defeated them and sacked La Ciudad de Zacatecas and Fresnillo,
and it's possible some records may have been destroyed. I am trying to
find out more about this, but don't know yet.

Peter Gerhard's "The North Frontier of New Spain" (Princeton University
Press, New Jersey, 1982) discusses the early frontier history of Fresnillo
on pages 84 through 86.

Also the IGI database has some Fresnillo baptism and marriages listed and
the reason I know this is because I've explored some of the Fresnillo records.

Aguirre is a name that is more common in Durango, but I've seen Landeros
in Northern Zacatecas. The history of Zacatecas was very tumultuous in
the 1800s and that may have resulted in some lost records. But if you check
the Family History Catalog at the above suggested site, you will get a
good start.

Happy Hunting,

John
