Surname: Gonzalez, Garay, Moreno
-------------------------

Oh, how I wish that were my grandfather....but I don't think it is. My
grandfather was born c. 1875 in Jerez, making him about 35 by 1910. In
his Social Security application (which did not require authentication back
in 1937) he lists his parents as Jose Gonzalez and Maria Garay. I've looked
at parish records and that seems to be a common enough name in Zacatecas,
but I've not found anything on any of them.

My grandfather did leave under strange circumstances - he would tell my
mother he didn't remember any of his family... did not want to talk about
it...and would not go back. I presumed it was a family feud, he was a runaway,
he was being chased by authorities, etc. In any case, he appears to have
headed toward northern TX and OK before the turn of the century, because
a delayed birth record for his daughter, Adela, (from 1st wife, Rita) notes
his daughter was born in Atoka, OK in 1900. Of course, delayed birth records
are just word of mouth and required little, if any, documentation. He also
had a son, Bruno, with his first wife. Bruno was born in OK c. 1907, according
to the 1920 census for Wise Co., TX. Like his father, Bruno also disappeared
in his 20's - family never heard of him again.

My grandfather is still a complete mystery, and it may be that he construed
his facts to hide his identity. I've yet to find evidence of his parents'
names, his chidren's real birthplaces, or of his marriage to 1st wife,
Rita. Rita appears to have died c. 1922 (or at least that's what we think
happened - no facts yet) because he married my grandmother in July of 1923
in Bridgeport, TX.

In an interesting story, his daughter (Adela), used to say she was not
really his daughter - that she was the product of an Indian rape. Again,
without any proof, I've gotten nowhere.

I don't recognize any of the names you sent, but I will keep them on file.
It's the closest I've gotten to family in Zacatecas. Perhpas they were
cousins....

Connie
