I have just received some info on John W Mentzor, born Oct 23, 1846
in Indiana Co, PA, the son of Zacharah & Jane Mentor. Died June 17,
1926 in a Disable Veteran's Home in Ca.
John served in the Civil War in Co. E 4th Cav, PA.
In 1869, he married my g-g-grandmother Lizzie F. Queer. They had 2
sons, Joseph Stotlar Mentzor born Aug 30, 1871, and Samuel Johnson
Mentzor, born June 14, 1873.
In 1873, John Mentzor deserted the family. He made it appear that he
had been killed "by 2 negrows".
Lizzie re-married to Gerhard Plohr (my g-g-grandfather) in 1880.
In 1912, while applying for benefits as the widow of a Civil War
soldier, she found that John Mentzor was still living (with his 3rd
wife!). Thus began a years of letter-writing, collecting of
affadavits, testimony, etc--all recently received from the National
Archives (>1000 pages!)
If this appears to connect with any one's family line, I'll be happy
to share the info I have.
John
