10/26/1862 - left for Washington,DC but stopped enroute at New York 7 ordered to Fort Schuyler under Gen Banks
11/26/1862 ordered to East New York
01/17/1863 - sent to Fortress Monroe; then New Orleans, LA, arriving on 01/29/1863
Encamped at Chalmette, 7 miles below New Orleans to 02/15/1863, then ordered to Pensacola, FL
03/29/1863, returned to New Orleans; sent to Donaldsonville & Plaquemine
05/27/1863, 6 Co's under Col Woodman sent to Port Hudson under Gen Nickerson / Dwight's Div
Advance on Port Hudson, 06/14/1863 & 06/22/1863

While I don't see Porter Thompson listed in the ME 2nd Cav, I would not be surprized to find that he did serve in that unit. I do find:

Engaged at Cherryville Cross-Roads, Marksville, Avoyelles Prairie & Yellow Bayou - rejoined main body at Thibodeaux on 06/01/1864
Aug 1864 - to Pensecola, FL - arrived 08/11/1864 & encamped near Barrancas
Engaged in fatigue duty & raids to Marianna, Fl & Pollard, Al during remainder of 1864
02/23/1865, unit down to 300 men, routed enemy at Milton, FL
