Recent research by a number of different researchers has indicated that the Thomas McLain of Wilmington, New Hanover Co, NC, who was probably the son or brother of Alexander McLean/McLain of the same area, was too old to be Rev. Thomas McLain of Greene and Hawkins Co.

There is also considerable evidence that has been compiled over the past few years that strongly suggests that Rev. Thomas McLain's wife was Elizabeth Duff, daughter of Shadrack and Deborah (Dixon/Dickson) Duff of Guilford Co. NC. There were several McLain families living in Guilford Co., NC at the same time, and Rev. Thomas McLain may well have belonged to one of them. The most promising candidate is a Joseph McLain who lived in the part of Guilford Co. that became Rockingham Co, NC in 1785. His 1808 will names his wife Nancy and son Thomas, among other children. As you know, Thomas and Elizabeth's oldest known son was named Joseph and oldest known daughter Nancy, and they had a daughter named Deborah. They also had a grandson named Shadrack D. McLain and a great-grandson named Shadrack Duff White.

All of this research has been summarized and discussed on Thomas McLain Treeshakers, a group of descendants of Rev. Thomas and Elizabeth McLain of Greene/Hawkins Co. If you have any problems getting to that website, let me know.

Pat (4th great-granddaughter of Thomas & Elizabeth by their son John and Elizabeth (Starnes) McLain)
