The Chastain is another connection. The Chastains were in the same IL area and the town of New Haven where Donald was born. Jimmy Chastain is the author of the "History of New Haven" book. He authored the book at age 12 with the help of a teach for school credit as he was born with something genetic and couldn't attend regular school. He died young. He did the book in 1942-43 and someone else updated it in 1988. J

You know, thinking about that, how many men would take a disabled child into their home to raise? Sam was severly deformed and the deformity became more pronounced as Sam aged. He hwlped in the offices of the lumber company where the rest of the men worked. By the time Daniel died, at least by 1930 Sam was in the "poor house". I'm sure you have ran across places in census records? Sam didn't want to be a drain on his brothers so he chose to live in one. Bill moved his family to California, got them settled, then went back to MO and brought Sam to CA to live with them. Sam lived with Cliff's family until early 1942. He then moved with Tom to Madera, a town 15 mile from Bill and his family. Tom had left his 3rd wife and 2 children.
Sam died Christmas Eve 1942. His death vertificate reads "cause of death, Acute Alcohlism". Dan drank a lot too. that may have been why his first wife divorced him. (just guessing). None of the other men became alcoholics. Earl, the youngest drank heavily, but when he married his last wife he stopped doing a lot of running around all over the world and settled down. Earl would get a job on ships and go to China or where ever the ship was going. He woud be gone as much as 2 years at a time.

I keep wondering if this isn't the Alexander/Lanson Dee line. That line had a John who had a son Samuel born about 1868. John wound up in MO, Dunklin Co., I think. Could Sam have wound up living w/Daniel because of some family trauma or someone died, and even tho his name was the same he wasn't Daniel's biological son? There seemed to be a lot of that back then. J

Did you find the Walter L. McGee in Dunklin CO. MO 1920 census? Walters full name is Walter Lee McGee (Walter himself always used the McGee spelling. Remember, He had no formal education).
The reason I'm looking at this is Walters draft papers for WW1show him as the father of children.
I had seen the census record before I found his papers where he signed up for the draft.
1920 Holcomb Dunklin, MO" Wallter L. McGee, b abt 1887 (Walter was born in 1890), MO. IL-IN. Bertha, Wife, b abt 1894, Willie L. son, b abt 1911, MO. Sam C. son, b abt 1913, MO James McGhee son, b abt 1914, Walter E. McGee, b abt 1916, MO.
If this is Cliffs Uncle Walter; these are children Cliff doesn't remember anything about. Notice that all his sons have the same names as our Walters brothers. James is the name of Uncle Toms son, born abt 1930-32., and one of Merrills sons b abt 1929.
I need to look for these boys in the 1930 census. I did find a notice of the death of a female child of Walter L McGee. I think it was in Stoddard County.I'll look for that and post it. Since Bertha has never been mentioned, maybe there was a divorce and she kept the kids, if this is Walter L. McGee the son od Daniel.
Clyde was living in Kennet Ward 1, Dunklin, MO, He is listed there age 25, b MO, Mae mcGee wife and jewell McGee son, b abt 1917, MO.
