Peter Klein emailed me quite a bit of info after looking at my ship
poster. What I thought I had told him, but apparently it didn't get into
the email, was that there were two ship master's named Shubael Swain-
one is mine living in NYC, and one is living in Philadelphia. The info
he had seems to be related to Philadelphia, although the name of the
ship is the same. Interesting problem.
Since my Shubael was the only ship master in NYC, all the ads that say
Captain Swain, probably relate to him, but there is no way to prove that
for certain.
He is the ship master of the print of the painting of the ship, as
master, in 1807.
There are incorrect records that say he died at sea on Jan 10, 1808,
with his brother Valentine. The Nantucket 1813 will of their parents
show Shubael but not Valentine to be alive. So there was some sort of
ship incident that i havn't yet found. He and another brother were
living in NYC at the time working.
I know he worked for merchants in 1815-16, and the ads make it look like
he did all along. It looks like he sailed for merchants frequently. But
on the back of his photo/portrait, it says that he sailed passenger
ships between NYC and England. Is there a way to find out about that?
Peter said he collected the Lloyds info over years, but I see some of
you talking about it now. Where are you getting the information?
My computer has been being fixed since yesterday until now, so I am
trying to catch up on emails-
Thanks, Sue Maxwell
