Hello Brian

Checked out your William John Reeks at Kew last week, as promised, and
Hayes were telling porkies!
ADM 188 listed Reeks, William John: SS(Short Service) 103088, born 1885
Ryde, Isle of Wight, enlisted 1906.
So I checked the entry in ADM 188/1149:
born 9 February 1885, Ryde, occupation butcher.
Ship ACHERON, List & NO 14a 1065, Stoker 2nd class.
He signed on 5 June 1906 for 5 years but was discharged to shore 8 Sep
1906 having bought himself out (£10). He was listed £7 for clothing and
bedding.
His character was very good. He was 5'6 & 7/10", had a 38" chest, dark
brown hair, grey eyes and fresh complexion and was tattooed on both
forearms.

So the clue provided by the photograph yielded results for you.

While searching ADM 188 index for R I noted these other REEKs before I got
to him:
William James Reeks, 167321, born 1877 Wimborne Dorset, enlisted 1892
Alfred John Reeks, 186078, born 1880 Witchampton, Dorset, enlisted 1895
Frederick Reeks, 230107, born 1886, Yorkshire, enlisted 1904

Happy hunting
Di
