Subject: Re: [LIST-UPDATE] What is the name of this list

Joan,
I agree that mail servers should be set up so that bounces go to "Errors to"
addresses, but if there isn't one, I would assume that they have to use some
other address (such as the From: address).
So the question really becomes: Assuming that the "Errors to" address is
configured correctly, what address should Mailman, as configured on
RootsWeb, be putting in the From: field? The address of the person sending
the message?

Drew-
I've copied below what I believe to be the relevant header info from a
SmartList list and a Mailman list:
SmartList list:
Return-Path: <>
From: poster's email address
To:
Resent-From:
Reply-To:
X-Loop:
Resent-Sender:
Mailman list:
Return-Path: <>
From: poster's email address
To:
X-BeenThere:
Reply-To:
X-Loop:
Sender:
Errors-To:
SmartList's Resent From header line appears to have been replaced in Mailman
by the X-BeenThere header line. Both lists are set to default to REPLY TO
LIST--so both have a RootsWeb-inserted Reply To header line.
Instead of SmartList's Resent Sender header, Mailman is calling that field
SENDER and I believe that is why the header is being misinterpreted by SOME
email clients on the receiving end and showing up as the address the message is
coming from. SmartList didn't have an Errors To header but I don't think
Mailman's addition of that field is causing any problem--I just think the SENDER
field is the problem.
I KNOW the fact that this SENDER: listname-bounces address overrode the
gc-gateway SENDER address caused the issues during testing with gatewayed posts
not making it through to the lists--and I suspect it is also the issue with
how the abbreviated headers are displayed for many mail clients.
