Steady rows of dash's or ='s could set off ISP content filters or AV filters
and cause problems with a message.

I don't understand what you mean, Dan.

My message at the head of this thread was sent by dragging that file
NONCE.TXT into the space in my email client's compose menu -- just as I
would attach anything to an email.

Melissa, If you think that attachments are being blocked on the list --
they're not.

Would the list admins PLEASE direct their questions and comments to
LISTOOWNERS-L. At the bottom of each list-update message ther is:

This list is reserved for discussion of topics related to the update of the
mailing lists. List Admins should discuss admin-specific topics (like
settings and tools) on the list.

My underlines for emphasis

Leave this list to the subscribers.

Every email program I've ever seen, used, or heard of, allows the editing of
reply text, Subject line, and To, CC & BCC lines. Unfortunately, many people
never avail themselves of the power of their chosen email program. When a
list is extremely busy, as this one is, such thoughtfulness is most
appreciated and important. Please, people, SNIP whatever text is not needed
in your reply! This is just good manners.

Notice that "X-BeenThere"? That is the equivalent of "Resent from."

I also wish people would change their subject lines to reflect what
they are discussing in the message...opening an email with one
subject line only to find that on top of not snipping non-pertinent
portions of the email they haven't changed the subject line and the
message of the text is entirely different than the subject line
points too. Also, digest receivers hopefully changing the subject
line from RE: XXX Digest Vol X Number X...

I'm getting the same and mine is a Yahoo! mail address, so again
nothing to do with AOL.

Rod's message with the nonce.txt was one of the list posts I received

Agree with Rod. His test message above arrived here with two text
attachments - one of which was the list tagline block which is not
normally separated out from the message body. I can send a screenie to
Melissa if she wants to see proof of this.

Reading the headers of your message above they are different, but the
one which seems to me to be the same function as the Resent From is
this one:

X-BeenThere:

So you could filter on that, or you could use either of these fields
to filter on initially I'd have thought:

List-Id: <list-update.rootsweb.com>
X-Loop:

Every email program may ALLOW it (and I agree they DO), but to be realistic
many do not bother to do that--and that is precisely why we need the hack to
strip the extraneous addresses from the headers before a message comes to
any
RootsWeb list.

While the lists are "moving" to new list management software, you won't need
to do anything. Your subscriptions will continue as before.

Hi, Susan-

As a list subscriber there isn't anything you need to do to prepare for the
moving of the lists to a new management system. It is merely important
that
you be aware that this is going to happen in case you fall into one of the
categories where the move might impact how you receive your list may--just
so
you will be aware of what is happening.

For instance, if you subscribe to a list in both list and digest modes--you
will be automatically dropped from digest mode upon the migration. If you
want to resub to the digests (while remaining subbed in list mode) you would
need to use a different email address for the digests.

If you filter mail from lists to a special folder you may need to tweak
those filters to ensure that list mail will end up where you want it to be.

Just a few minor differences to be aware of when your subscribed lists
migrate to the new software.

For most subscribers the changeover should be relatively seamless.

It's called "goodbye_msg" and is the "Text sent to people leaving the list"

another Mailman feature we won't have access to.

Daryl

Thanks for bringing this up Daryl. You are absolutely correct. There seem
to be a bunch of options on the General Options page that are available in
Mailman that are not appearing on the RootsWeb admin page. Apparently
RootsWeb
is not permitting admins to use these options--and some maybe I can
understand but this one I cannot.

On my non-RootsWeb Mailman list, under Notifications, I am given the option
to either SEND or NOT SEND a welcome or goodbye letter and I had hoped we'd
be given the option to silently unsub--this comes up occasionally if a
subscriber dies for instance and you don't want to bother the family.
However, I
can understand that it might be thought admins could abuse this
option...but
between those two options is the following one:

"Text sent to people leaving the list. If empty, no special text will be
added to the unsubscribe message." This is followed by a box for entering
a
customized goodbye message.

If possible this option SHOULD be added back for our use. I could almost
have sworn these boxes WERE there at the beginning of testing and
disappeared
after I stopped studying those pages. <g>

Joan
(Edit goodbye_msg)

Between send welcome message and send goodbyr message under general
options.
