Hello,
I would like to throw my 2 cents in on this thread.
Though my Claiborne Co., Tennessee connection is thru my maternal G-G-G Grandparents: Green Berry HILL and Lucy Ann CHRISTIAN, who lived there for some 15 years or so, with several children born there, possibly including my g-g grandfather, Preston HILL.
However, my paternal ancestors include Mary LEWIS, daughter of Stephen LEWIS and Juliana GRIFFITH. According to one of my cousins (another descendant of Stephen and Juliana), Stephen LEWIS was a son of David LEWIS and Mary MERCHANT (MARCHANT?).
This would make us distant cousins, as Fielding LEWIS of CLAIBORNE County was a brother of my ancestor Stephen LEWIS.
I wonder if any of you can help me to define this LEWIS family as far as possible?
I would like to confirm this ancestry, and document it where possible.
I also ask, because I have a LEWIS line in maternal ancestry, that is also reportedly linked back to the LEWIS of Warner Hall line. However, we have been unable to confirm this link, as that ancestor, one James LEWIS of North Carolina who married Angeline BEASLEY, came to Southern Illinois thru Tennessee and Kentucky by about 1830, and was murdered in the line of duty (James was a Sherrif's Deputy) in 1834. We have been unable to confirm this linkage thus far, though the oral history in this line for more than a century is that James was a descendant of the Warner Hall LEWIS family.
If any of you can help with any of this, thanks in advance.
Kim CHAPMAN

Family stories say that Isabella never married and had 5 children. She farmed next to her Father, Fielding Lewis and moved to MO after 1860 All her children married well and were doctors and lawyers. Rumor has it that Samuel Martin Moore, husband to her sister Mary Ann"Polly", was the father of her children. Volume 4 of the pioneer Lewis families by Michael Lewis Cook speaks of this as does a letter that William H. Lewis wrote to John M. Lewis in Portland,Oregon in 1937
