Cate, Lois and others interested in Draymen records:
The Williams Research Center (The Historic New Orleans Collection) has
responded
very promptly to my e-mail inquiry concerning draymen records. Following is
their letter:
"We have received your e-mail concerning German draymen's records. Although
the
Williams Research Center does have in its holdings the Deutsches Haus
collection
of German records, those records are largely administrative and statistical
in
nature and do not include membership or biographical information for any
draymen's associations. The Deutsches Haus records would, for instance,
contain
some monthly reports listing the numbers of Germans who entered the country
through the port of New Orleans but it would not list the names of those
immigrants or mention families to which the German community may have
provided
financial aid or job placement assistance."
The letter adds that they do not have interlibrary loan or provide research
services on a fee basis, but they do encourage visitors to view or utilize
their
holdings.
