Subject: [KSRILEY-L] Mail List Activity
Date: Mon, 4 Feb 2002 17:58:27 -0600
Hello to all KSRILEY Listers,
A note to let you know that KSRILEY-L is still here. We are having relatively little activity on the list.
Would like to attempt stimulating some activity on the list by asking you to do what is known as a "Roll Call."
This consists of each interested lister to submit a message that relates something of their background and their interests in Riley County, Kansas.
I will start:
My birthplace is in southwestern OK and I have a generally Southern heritage - VA, KY, TN, TX, and OK.
My connection with Riley County is one of some 44 years today. I came to Manhattan as an understudy to a plant pathologist at Kansas State University in 1958. Worked on the Kansas State Campus as a U. S. Department of Agriculture research employee and adjunct faculty member untill 1988. Since that time have worked intermittently part-time in the same work.
Became interested in genealogy/family history some 3-4 years ago and have worked since with Riley County Genealogical Society (RCGS) in computing and publication development.
We are just completing an update to a Riley County Rural Cemetery Book and it will be available soon. RCGS has good resources to help you in your research of Riley County families. You can contact them on the Internet at: http://www.rileycgs.com I should say upfront, however, that their services are not free, but moderate, to defray expenses.
Although I have come to love Riley County very much over these years: health, career, and family reasons point toward a move to TX in the coming year or so. I will go only sadly.
So, that's my story. Although I recommend RCGS highly, I do understand that Rootsweb mailing lists are to provide contact between interested parties for free exchange of genealogical information. Thus, I will honor that principle inasmuch that is possible.
I urge each of you to do something of the same kind of transmittal as this so that we can know what our group is interested and wants the mailing list to go.
As an aside, if someone is interested in working as List Administrator, that would be welcomed. The task has not yet been very great, but then our traffic has been light. We have more subscribers than you might guess --- some 35-40, would have to check for detail. If you are interested in this, let me know.
Hopefully, it not speaking too bluntly to say that the success of a mailing list depends both on the List Administrator and the subscribers - each of you. Notwithstanding the paragraph above, I hope to do a better job than I have in the past.
Thank you, hope to be hearing from all of you,
Lewis Browder
