Marshall, along with his younger brother Samuel, served with B & E companies of the 11th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry operating out of Ft. Laramie during the 1861-1865 years. The 11th OVC was assigned difficult task of protecting the Overland Trail travelers and mail.
