I don't know or ever heard of the kern shop in detroit. but My grandpa and grandma lived near detroit and around the are but were born in michigan there are alot of kerns in michigan.edward w. kern and emma o. (gruebiner) kern was her name they had four kids george w. jr, pearl, carol elsie kern and edward w. kern. they are all gone and suspect all thier siblings are gone now also i haven't gotten the birth certificates on the other ones yet but they are all in the 1930 census of michigan.
