I have never been able to find my great-grandmother's family. I hope someone
has a clue for me. My great-grandmother was Sarah Kern born around 1867,
possibly in Illinois. She died around 1927 in Kansas. She married Percy Boyd on
Nov. 7, 1901 in Jefferson County, Kansas. They lived on a farm in Jefferson
County until they lost their farm in the 1920's. They moved to Topeka after losing
their farm. My uncle (now deceased) told me that he remembered going to a
Kern family reunion when he was a child in Kansas and meeting a lot of Kern aunts
and uncles and cousins. Sarah has been my brick wall for a long time. There
is a possibility that she was married before to Varnum Richardson Sr. in
Greenwood County, Kansas. Their date of marriage would have been Sept. 24, 1885. The
reason that I do not have Sarah's date of birth appears to be because she may
have been quite a bit younger than her first husband, so she was probably
listed as a little older than she really was. Likewise, when she married my
great-grandfather, Percy Boyd who was younger than she was, she shaved a few years
off her age. Family legend says that Percy Boyd married an older widow who had
a farm and more or less lived off her money. Any help that anyone out there
can give me would be wonderful. I'm always excited to meet new cousins.
