Hi Deborah,

The half circle is a page right out of the book you were looking for. John D. Kern is our Dominic's father... John Dominic Kern. His wife is Margaret Vaeth and those are the 2 names on the front of the book. If you've seen it, then you know it lists their children and their decendants. But it doesn't tell much about THEM!! Well I've discovered, very easily actually, that John Dominic's parents are Franciscus Kern and Margaret Mayer. John Dominic is actually the youngest in his family. I've traced Margaret Mayer's family back a few more generations but I'm stuck on Franciscus Kern right now because there were so many of them during that time period. I'll figure it out though! :-)

As for Margaret Vaeth, I discovered her parents are Bernardi Vaeth and Margaretha Hauk and actually, Margaret was born Anna Margaretha. She is the oldest in her family. I"ve traced both parents back several generations. What makes them easy to trace is that they all lived in Freudenberg for generations. They rarely moved. They were catholic so all their christenings and marriages and deaths were painstakingly written down. Most entries mention the parents and that's what makes searching for them so easy. Kern was an incredibly common name by the 1800's in that city. But that's because the few Kerns back in the early 1700's had soooo many kids each that within 2 generations in that town alone, the Kern name was as common as Smith is here.

Anyway, I'd love to share more with you. Thanks for writing back.

Melissa

PS.... I bet your mother in law would let you make a copy of that book. Photo copying it would be much cheaper than getting the film and getting an entire copy that way.
