Will

In the name of God Amen, I, J. A. Kern being of
sound & disposing mind & memory but consid-
ering the uncertainty of life do hereby make this
my last will & testament, revoking all others by
me at any time heretofore made. . . . . ______
1st. After the payment of all of my just debts
which I desire paid. I leave all of my prop-
erty real & personal to my son J. W. T. Kern his wife
& children which I hereby give, devise & bequeath
to them. My son H. F. Kern having gotten already his
full share of my property, among the debts I direct
paid, I especially charge my estate with the pay-
ment of the debt of $348.00 evidenced by my bond
to Martha C. Kern, the wife of my son J. W. T. Kern,
and I do further appoint & nominate my son J. W. T. -
Kern as the Executor of this my last will & testa-
ment & ask the Court not to require any security
upon his hand as such Executor.
Given under my hand & seal this 4th day of
Sept., 1893.

"This my Codicil made this 9th day of November 1893, amend
ing & annulling so much of my will as is in conflict therewith", I hereby
give,
devise & bequeath to my son J. W. T. Kern & his wife,
during their lives & after the death of either to the
survivor in fee simple all of my real & personal
property of every kind & description, revoking hereby the
clause giving it to them & their children as set
forth in my foregoing will, Witness my had & seal
to this my last will & Testament.

At a County Court, held for Frederick County, Va.
At the Jany. Term, 8th day of Janry., 1894, the Last
Will and Testament of J. A. Kern, was produced to the
Court and fully proven by Wm R. Alexander, & J. R. Grigs.
by. the sub.-witnesses to the will, & as to the Codicil
was proven by Holmes Boyd Jr. - & Wm R. Alexander, the sub-
scribing witnesses thereto, who appeared in Court,
and being duly sworn and examined by the Court,
proved that J. A. Kern, in their presence, (they being
together) signed, acknowledged, and declared said pa-
per to be His Last Will and Testament, and that they -
(Wm R. Alexander, J. R. Grigsby, as to will & Wm. R. Alexander
& Holmes Boyd Jr. - as to codicil) at the request of said -
J. A. Kern, in his presence, and in the presence of -
each other, signed their names as Witnesses thereto,
and that said J. A.Kern was at the time, of sound and
disposing mind; and said will is ordered to be recorded,
and on motion of J. W. T. Kern, the Executor therein -
named, who made oath according to law.
Certificate for obtaining a probate thereof in due form
be without security agreeable to will entered into
and acknowledged bond in the penalty of $300.00 con-
itioned according to law and took the prescribed
oath.

[Note: John A. Kern died 15 Dec 1893 and is buried in Welltown. His wife,
Mary Jane Hedges, died 22 Jun 1893 and is also buried in Welltown. The
children of John A. Kern & Mary Jane Hedges were - Henry Furlong Kern (married
Jane Ann Boyd); John William T. Kern (married Martha C. Barbour); Perry
G. L. Kern (died as a child)]
