Jacob and Susan Kerns Sr. of Berkeley County, Virginia
Jacob Kerns Sr. was born circa 1768 in Pennsylvania and died in Berkeley
County, Virginia. He married Susan _____, whose maiden name is not known.
They lived in Old Berkeley County, Virginia in the vicinity of Jones Spring,
Hedgesville, Snyder's, and Cherry Run (now in Berkeley and Morgan Counties,
West Virginia). This is not the same Jacob Kern Jr., son of Jacob, 1734-1799,
and Catherine (Funk) Kern Sr., who married Susanna Spielman in York County,
Pennsylvania. That Jacob Kern Jr. settled in Switzerland County, Indiana
about 1817-1818.
Children of Jacob and Susan Kerns Sr. were:
1. Michael Kerns was born Dec. 13, 1790 and died March 5, 1865 in Berkeley
Co. W.Va. He lived in the Hedgesville District near Jones Spring. Michael
married Nancy Kees on March 24, 1814. Nancy was born in 1796 and died on
January 29, 1870. Both were buried in the Riner Cemetery in Berkeley County,
but Nancys grave is not inscribed.
2. Henry Kerns, born circa 1792, married Margaret Riner, daughter of Henry
and Elizabeth Riner, on September 27, 1814 in Berkeley County. It is believed
they emigrated before 1840. Where?
3. Elizabeth Kerns was born on Jan. 24, 1794 and died on Dec. 17, 1874
at Jones Spring, WV. She married Jonas S. Shimp, son of John and Eva Mary
(Speck) Shimp, on Sept. 20, 1813, in Berkeley County, Virginia. He was
born on Oct. 18, 1795, and died on Aug. 29, 1870. Both were buried in the
Riner Cemetery Hedgesville District.
4. Mary Kerns was born circa 1796 and may have died sometime in 1869, in
Jefferson County, Iowa. She married David Courtney on May 22, 1817 in Berkeley
County. David was born circa 1790 and died on April 13, 1869, in Jefferson
County, Iowa. Both were buried in the Courtney Cemetery, Section 30, Walnut
Township, Jefferson County, Iowa.
5. Barbara Kerns was born in March 1797 and died on July 30, 1876 at Tomahawk,
Berkeley County, WV. She married John Stuckey on June 13, 1816.
6. Jacob Kerns, Jr. was born 1800 in Berkeley County and died May 22, 1869
in Morgan County W. Va. He is buried in the Snyder's Methodist Church Cemetery.
He married Mary Carr, daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Green) Carr, on Dec.
15, 1821, in Berkeley County. Mary was born circa 1801 and died about 1836.
They lived in Morgan County, WV.
Children of Jacob and Mary (Carr) Kerns Jr. were:
a. Mary Margaret Kerns was born on December 25, 1834, and died on July
25, 1915. She married Lewis Wesley Goodman September 27, 1853.
b. Sara Jane Kerns was born on March 15, 1823 in Morgan County, Virginia,
and died on January 13, 1866. She married John Courtney, son of Michael
and Anna Maria (Bowden) Courtney, on December 22, 1842.
c. Henry Kerns was born circa 1822 in Morgan County, West Virginia, and
died March 13, 1871 in Morgan County. He married Kesiah Keeseker, daughter
of John and Sarah (Hickson) Keesecker, on March 5, 1845 in Morgan County
d. Samuel F. Kerns was born in 1825 in Berkeley County.
e. Susan Kerns was born 1828 in Berkeley County. She married Benjamin Darby
June 24, 1847
f. Jacob C. Kerns was born in 1830 in Berkeley County and died circa 1865.
g. Elizabeth Kerns was born 1835 in Berkeley County, Virginia and died
circa 1855. She married John Lowman.
7. John Kern, son of Jacob and Susan Kerns Sr., of whom nothing more is
known at this time. Not proven.
