I have been interested in the messages in the past few days regarding Conrad KERN. He is my ancestor through my father, Clarence R. KERN married to Myrtle James KERN. My descendancy from Conrad is as follows:
Conrad KERN married to Mary Magdaline (Billings?)
Adam Sr.KERN married to Katherine Riblin
Conrad KERN married to Mary (Polly) Campbell Berry
Adam Berry KERN married to Martha Poarch
Adam Newton KERN married to LaDora Cloud
Clarence Robert KERN married to Myrtle James
I have the record which shows Conrad arriving Philadelphia, Oct. 1, 1754 on ship Phoenix, from Rotterdam, last from Cowes.
There had been a question about the area in Germany from which Conrad came. I have done a bit of research on this and present my findings for your approval or disapproval. I had no luck in finding his place of birth nor his parents place of birth. I decided to try to check some of the other passengers listed with Conrad on the Phoenix. In a book in our local genealogy library I found reference to a Johannes Jung (one of the passengers listed). I found that his property was being confiscated by the Zweibrucken Goavenment No. 11, 1758 because he had "gone to American without being manumitted."
Another section speaks of "The District of Weginburg in the former Duchy of Zweibruckern consisted of villages of Schonau, Hirchtal, Northweiler and Rumback, along with several outlying farms." In that same section is "in 1737 the following villagers went to Pennsylkvania: Georg KERN of Rumbach." He is listed on the ship St. Andrew Galley which landed at Philadelphia in Sep. 1737 where he took oath of allegiance on Sep. 26, 1737.
Another paragraph begins: "On June 1, 1786, the Zweibrucken Government decreed that the property of Michael and Jacob Schneider (he is on list of passengers with Conrad KERN) of Rumbach, who had 'already gone to
America 20 years ago' (which would have been almost the exact time from when the Phoenix arrived), as far as the same had been derived from what their parents had acquired, should be handed over to their brothers and sisters. But that part of the legacy which had come from the yielded property of the parents, was to be collected for the treasury." This apparently had to do with the estate of the parents and their share of it.
A Thomas KERN of Freisback, Dist. of Germersheim, who married Margaretha Jop is mentioned as having migrated to American and he had died 1761.
All of the above areas are considered the Palitinate as I understand it. This doesn't prove anything but makes me think this might be the approximate area from which Conrad came. I will appreciate comments.
