Heart Attack Proves Fatal To John H. Kern
John H. Kern, 45, popular Winchester postoffice employee, died suddenly
at 3 o'clock this morning at his home, 100 Morningside Drive, this city,
following a heart attack. He became stricken last night at 7 o'clock while
on Boscawen street and was removed to his home where he failed to rally.
The deceased was a son of John W. Kern, formerly of Berkeley county, W.
Va., but more recently of Winchester, and the late Mrs. Emma C. Knicewarner
[Nicewarner] Kern, a native of Berryville. He was born in Winchester on
May 5, 1901, and had resided in this community all of his life where he
was active in civic affairs.
He was married to the former Miss Katherine Clem, daughter of the late
A. J. and Margaret Bosserman Clem, of this city. The deceased was a member
of Grace Lutheran Church, the Mens Bible Class of that church, I. O. O.
F. Royal Arcanum, the Sarah Zane Fire Company and the McIlwee Municipal
Band. He had been a member of the latter organization since its formation
here.
Postal Clerks Officer
Mr. Kern was appointed first vice-president last June of the Virginia State
Federation of Post Office Clerks, having already served as vice-president.
He entered the employ of the Winchester post office on November 5, 1924,
as a sub-carrier and was appointed a money order clerk on April 1, 1926,
in which capacity he had served for the past twenty years.
The deceased had served as a Winchester Scout Commissioner for three years.
His Survivors
In addition to his father and wife, he is survived by two brothers, Harry
Kern, of Winchester, and Charles Kern, of Washington, D. C., and a sister,
Mrs. Roy Boyce of this city.
Funeral services will be conducted from the late residence, 100 Morningside
Drive, Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock by the Rev. William E. Eisenberg,
pastor of Grace Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
The body rests at Omps Funeral Home.
