Thought I would share an obituary from a family scrapbook for those that
might be interested.

From a Washington, D.C. newspaper dated 1913

"Israel S. SMITH for many years a clerk in the Treasury
Department, died Monday at his home, 913 O Street, Northwest. Funeral
services will be held at the house at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, and
interment will be in Glenwood cemetery. Rev. J. Henning Neims will
officiate.
Mr SMITH was born near Princeton, NJ in 1829 & was a grandson of
Hugh RUNYON of revolutionary fame. Following the death of of his parents
he went to live with a sister in Springfield, Ill. where he became
acquainted with Abraham Lincoln, who was a close neighbor. In 1852 he
married Miss Mary K. KERN of Philadelphia.
While in Washington in 1861, awaiting his appointment to a
government position by President Lincoln, he was one of the band of
citizens who assembled in the old Willard Hall under Marshall Ward H.
Lamon and pledged to stand together for the defense of Washington until
the arrival of troops to protect the city. They were mustered into
service April 16, 1862 and were honorably discharged May 3 when their
services were no longer needed.
Upon receiving his appointment to the Treasury Department soon
after the arrival of the Federal Troops he enlisted in the Treasury
Guards and saw service with them until they were mustered out.
For the past two years Mr. Smith had suffered terribly from
heart disease.
He is survived by his wife and seven children, Mrs. Mary BARKER,
Mrs. William J. DAVIS, Mrs. Martin WOLF, Miss Margaret K. SMITH, Miss
Florence G. SMITH, Israel S. SMITH Jr. and A Kern SMITH. A sister living
in Springfield, Ill. Twelve Grandchildren and four great grandchildren
also survive him."
