There's a typed manuscript in the Genealogy Department of the New Albany, Floyd
County, Indiana Public Library entitled [ "KARNES FAMILY" of NORTH CAROLINA AND
INDIANA (Spelled Kern, Kearnes, Karnes, Carn and Carnes)] and goes on to state
-- In this Karnes family history the first of record is Leonhard Kern of early
Rowan County, North Carolina.
There is a George (Kerns) (Karnes) b. July 4, 1803 in N.C. died February 8,
1861 Washington County, IN (unmarried) and states he was baptized at the Back
Church in Davidson County, eldest son of Leonard, Jr & Katherine (Doerner)
Carnes. Buried in the very old cemetery that is on the land bought by him and
Samuel in Section 34, Pierce Township, Washington county, Indiana. His grave is
now marked by a broken stone, lying flat on the ground. He was never married,
and was a carpenter by trade. After the marriage in 1832, of Caty Carnes, widow
of Leonard, Jr. to Henry Wyman, Sr., George and Samuel remained on the old
Carnes homeplace until after their Mother's death, at which time the Carnes
estate was settled. At that time the heirs sold out their shares to Solomon
Karnes, where he and his descendants lived for many years.
This article/item may not be of any use to you, but then again, it may help
someone else.
I have a KERN/S - KERNES line also - Rev. John KERNS married Edna/Edney SMITH by
John T. Johnson on October 21st 1830 Jefferson County, IN recorded November 10,
1830.
A daughter - Caroline of the Rev & his wife, who married Elisha West Sinex named
a son John Karnes Sinex. You can see the different variations of the name in
just one family. Check them all.
You can view what I have on this surname on my homepage (url shown below my
name) under my WILCOX/SINEX Genealogy Data Base.
