Subject: [KERN-L] new proram for lists...."Story Time"
Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1998 12:22:51 PDT
Hello everyone! I got an idea last night about a new program, similar
to word of the week, that I am calling "Story Time"! First off, this is
not gonna be weekly right now, more like a monthly thing. What this is,
is I will pick a topic and you respond to the list. This is not a
sharing of regular genealogy info like "Word of the week" is, however.
This month, the "Story Time" topic is "How I got started in genealogy."
So what I would like is for people to post how they got interested:). I
will start it off by submitting my story at the end of the instructions
below:
IMPORTANT: Do not hit reply to submit your story. Start a new message
and address it to where "SURNAME" is replaced by
the name of the list (Barringer, Black,Bradford, Coventry, Eller,
Hackett, or Kern).
My story:
I was at my grandma Bradford's for Christmas in Brevard, NC 10 years ago
in 1988 when I was only 12. She had tons of books and I was always
faniscinated by the titles. One day, I was looking through them and saw
a book entitled "The Bradford Family" and I asked her about it. She
told me that we are supposed to be descendants of Governor William
Bradford's who came over on the Mayflower to Plymouth Rock, but no one,
to her knowledge, has proved it. I decided then that is what I was
going to do...prove it, or disprove it as the case may be. That first
year, I had no clue how to go about finding the information and I
started at the public library and asked for books on him. Of course the
librarians natuarlly assumed this was for a school project and directed
me to the encyclopedias which only had about 3 or 4 paragraphs on
him...obviously not enough to help. Also as you can see, I went FORWARD
from Gov. Bradford,....I wish I had known not to do that! The following
school year, we had an English teacher who did genealogy and so she had
us do a project with genealogy just telling what we knew about our
ancestors and also about any family legends of who are ancestors were.
She gave us all the descendancy charts and everything to do the project
on and THAT was when I really got my start. She taught us the correct
way to do it, or should I say the least frustrating....go back from
yourself. 10 years later (now), I have info on one line back to
Charlemagne and his ancestors (this is my mom's side, a family that
married into the Hackett line can be traced back then) and actually,
that line was descended from Charlemagne 10 different times! The reason
I picked this topic for this month is because people always ask me how
and when I got started on my genealogy since I just turned 22. If you
have any suggestions on topics, please feel free to send them to me
ONE LAST NOTE: I am going on a church retreat this Friday on the 24th.
If you need to get ahold of me by email, go ahead and email me, but I
probably won't be able to get back to you til after 8pm on Saturday
(when it ends). Bye for now and good luck:)
