Karnes Family
>From a newspaper quote in WV in July 1965:
"The history of the Karnes, which dates back 235yrs, has been
one of great growth. The family now number into the thousands and
has entered into all phases of American life.
The first pioneer of the family, Nicholas kern, came to the
state of Pennsylvania on Oct.2,1727 in the ship "Advantage"
with several hundred other pilgrims.
Nicholas died in Pennsylvania, but his wife Catherine, with her
two sons, Michael and George, came to Virginia where she married
Mather Sawp, a widoer with six children.
Michael settled in Augusta Co. Va and was the father of 13 children,
among wom was Moses.
Moses settled in Monroe Co. where his father had given him
500 acres of land. He married Aggy Thompson and to them were born
2 sons and 5 daughters. The sons were Madison and Henry, who settled
in Mercer Co. near Spanishburg. They had large families which
have spread to all parts of the nation.
The karnes generations are among the pioneer settlers of Mercer
Co.,WV. They hail from the low lands of the Netherlands of Holland.
They are descendants of the Germanic tribes that pushed their way
into the low lands of the Netherlands of Holland.
Nicholas Kern, the progenitor of the Karnes family in America
came in the company of several hundred Palatins or high officials who
sailed from Rotterdam, Holland.
The name Kern was pronounced "Karn" in German, hence the various
spellings of Karn, Kern, Cairn, Cairns, Kairn, Kairnes, and now we have
the present family names of Karnes, which we have in consideration
The will of Michael Carnes, Probated in Bedford Co., Va,is recorded
Kern: other records of him there are spelled Cairns,Carnes, and Karnes
