Hi Susan,
Ever since you gave me the name Nicholas KERN as the father of my Frederick
KERN , I spent most of yesterday looking for the Nicholas KERN that might be
the father of Frederick and I think I found him, or at least his family. What
I did was to combine information from several sources on the internet and a
set of World Family Tree Data disks that I own. I took the most reliable
looking stuff and combined them together and was thus able to build a family.
I should warn you, however that none of this has yet been verified and so
should be taken with a grain of salt.
One confusion was the locations listing both Bucks Co, PA and Northampton Co
PA. On checking, I discovered that Northampton Co PA was formed from part of
Bucks Co in 1752 so the family could have been in one town & changed counties
during that period. Another confusion is the tendency of Pennsylvania KERN
families to give all of their children of the same sex a common first name at
baptism. For example one family might name their six children: Hans Lorentz,
Hans Nicholas, Hans Joseph, Anna Margaret, Anna Maria, Anna Saloma and then
for the rest of their lives, these individuals go by only their middle name:
thus the above family would ever after be listed only as Lorentz, Nicholas,
Joseph, Margaret, Maria & Saloma. So, sometimes an individual will be listed
under both names and sometimes only under the middle name. One cannot assume
that Johannes Adam would be listed later as Johannes but probably as Adam.
So: here is what I have: There are 2 Nicholas KERN familes of the correct time
period and in the same place. They may be the same person , they may be father
and son but they are most certainly related. They have the same approximate
date of death but different dates of birth. For the Nicholas KERN born in 1666
I have only 1 child & no spouse listed but a clear record of his ancestors.
He is listed as dying about 1748. The other Nicholas KERN is listed as born
about 1693 but his wife is listed as 7 years older. His listed dod is May 4,
1749 in Bucks Co, PA. I compiled his children from several sources, each
listing only one of the children. His parents are not given. His wife is
listed as Maria Margaretha. If the date of birth for this second Nicholas
KERN is a mistake and he was actually born earlier, the two could easily be
the same person.
To compolicate matters, one of the Nicholas Kerns is listed as having a son
and grandson named Nicholas.
Here is Nicholas KERN #1's family:
