Looking for info on Edward Elmer Kern, b. Feb. 22, 1861 - d. Jan. 25,
1913 in Manhattan, KS. One family note says birthplace was Fort Madison,
WI, but there is no such city. There IS a Fort Madison, IA so that may
be it.

It seems his father never returned from the Civil War, whether a
casualty or for some other reason, and Edward Elmer was adopted into the
LAIR family, keeping his full birth name with the addition of Lair =
Edward Elmer Kern Lair. Unknown whethere this adoption was formal or
informal.

He became a pharmacist, married an Anna Mosley and they had one child,
Leslie Edward Kern Lair.

Any helpful leads deeply appreciated.
