LONG FILES, MESSAGES AND ATTACHMENTS
On one of the other mails lists this weekend someone sent a 1.2 MB GEDCOM
message to the entire list. The message was actually meant for one
specific person but everyone on the list received it. One person
commented that it took him and his service provider more than six hours
to straighten out that system because of the problems this message
caused. I was out of service for over an hour myself, before I could
finally get the message deleted.
So the point of this section is; please do not send extremely long
messages to the group as a whole. If you have a lot of information to
offer, send a shorter message telling what information you have, then
have people contact you directly for a private message with the data.
The question is how to define "extremely long," I guess just a little
common sense would be the way to do it. Obviously, with the trouble
everyone had today, a file of 1MB or more is well past the limits of
extremely long.
A COUPLE OF REMINDERS:
Anywhere in this message that you see the word ListName you should
substitute the name of the surname list you are subscribed to, i.e. if
you are on the BEERS list, change ListName to BEERS for any of the
addresses or commands.
These lists are not exceptionally active, it is not uncommon to go for
several days without messages. If you are worried that you may not be on
the list any longer, send a review message as shown further down in
this message.
When you respond to a message on the list it automatically goes to the
originator only. To send a copy of the response to the list in general,
you have to manually add the list address to your response.
The digest on these lists may or may not be working. The maiser mail
list program has problems that should be fixed soon, if they are not
already taken care of. If you subscribed in digest mode, you may want to
unsubscribe and then subscribe to the regular mode (all messages
individually). I dont think youll be overwhelmed by messages, since
none of these lists are very busy.
MESSAGE ADDRESSES:
Mail Messages to the list go to:
Commands go to:
If youre on other mail lists youve probably noticed people sending
unsub and sub messages and other commands to you and everyone on the
list. But that just doesnt do it, since you have to send your command
to the right address. Luckily we dont have that problem on our lists,
but just keep the difference in mind. These same addresses apply for any
mail list on the maiser server.
SOME COMMANDS:
To unsubscribe from the list:
Mail to:
Subject: blank (not read by system)
Message body: UNSUB ListName
To get a copy of the ListName list welcome message (lists some other
commands):
Mail to:
Subject: blank (not read by system)
Message body: SEND ListName.HI
To make sure you are still subscribed (if you havent been getting any
mail):
Mail to:
Subject: blank (not read by system)
Message body: REVIEW
Then when you get a response from the server, check for your
e-mail address. If it isnt there, subscribe again and all will be well.
If you need something specific in connection with the list, or have some
problem, send a message to with the List Name in the
subject line.
OH, AND ONE MORE THING
The Genealogists Psalm
Genealogy is my pastime, I shall not stray.
It maketh me to lie down and examine
half-buried tombstones.
It leadeth me into still courthouses; It
restoreth my ancestral knowledge.
It leadeth me in paths of census records &
ship's passenger lists for my surname's sake.
Yea, though I walk through the shadows of
research libraries & microfilm readers,
I shall fear no discouragement.
For a strong urge is within me; the curiosity
& motivation they comforteth me.
It demandeth preparation of storage space
for the acquisition of countless documents.
It annointeth my head with burning mid-night
oil; my family group sheets
runneth over.
Surely birth, marriage, & death dates shall
follow me all the days of my life;
And I shall dwell in the house of a family-
History seeker forever.
