Hi,
I am new to the list and have been looking through the archived postings.I
am just starting to research my GGGrandparents, Edward Lee KERN and Flora
Elizabeth COOK.
I know very little about them. Edward was born in Canada in 1832 and Flora
was born in New York. I know of two of their children, Ellen Elizabeth KERN
born 28 May 1863 in Canada (my GGrandmother) and John C. KERN born in 1864
in Canada.
The first record I have of this family is Ellen Elizabeth (KERN) ALLEN's
appearance on the 1895 state census of Coffey Co., KS. On this census it
says that she was born in Canada and came from Minna (can't read it very
well--I guessed it was Minnesota). Ellen's brother John lived near by in
Coffey Co. and I think he married, Susan, the sister of Ellen's husband
Joseph ALLEN.
Both of these families moved to California around 1904. John C. KERN
settled in Northern California and Ellen E. (KERN) ALLEN settled in Santa
Monica, California. Some of the KERNs moved to the Santa Barbara area.
I know that I have to find out where my people were from in Canada but it
is such a big country. I haven't figured out quite how to do research in
their records.
I have read some material on the KERNs that came to America from Europe,
perhaps Germany, stopping in Holland. There is a story that one of the
KERNs loaned money to the Dutch government which was never repaid. I have
heard that some KERNs are trying to prove their ancestory back to this
point since the family has some kind of legal case to receive payment on
this debt. Tracing all these lines back, for whatever reason, should be a
boon for genealogists.
Several of the KERN brothers who came to America were loyalists and were
forced to moved to Canada. I wonder if I am from one of these lines.
I would love to hear from you.
Sincerely,
Daniela
