Indexes to early Kentucky surveys show many tracts of land surveyed for John MAY or John MAY with John Bannister & Co.

Does anyone if these John Mays are the same person and if this is the same John May who was killed by Indians in 1790 (and for whom Maysville was named)?

I have an entry about "The May Family" from Kentucky Biographies, but where can I get further information? When I was at the KY State Fair a couple of years ago, there was a display that mentioned John May's land speculation.
